A lot has gone on between the games that sometimes it's all anybody talks about. Let's figure out a few things that we learned ON the field on Sunday.
- Jay Cutler and the Bears have reminded us, once again, of the importance of winning the turnover battle. This week, only 3 teams that won had a turnover, and each of those three forced at least one turnover from the losing team. So no matter how favored you are against a team *coughninerscough*, you aren't going to win when you have 4 turnovers and don't force any of your own.
- J.J. Watt can do it all. He's appearing in commercials everywhere, on the SNF intro and now he's catching touchdowns. He currently has the same number of sacks as he has touchdowns. I think they should get him in there every game!
- No one is safe from injury. We saw a flood of injuries throw a stick in the spokes of fantasy football yesterday. Ryan Mathews, RG3, A.J. Green, Carson Palmer, Jamaal Charles, Doug Martin, DeSean Jackson, Vernon Davis were all guys who were fantasy starters, or almost in Palmer's case, who disappointed owners on Sunday. It's a long season guys, as long as I didn't recite your whole roster, you'll recover.
- Never count Aaron Rodgers out, especially at home. At one point in the second quarter, the Packers were trailing 21-3 and had only a 12.2% chance to win. After a beautifully executed two-minute drill to close the first half, he threw two more touchdowns in the second half on his way to being the leading QB of the week, throwing for 346 yards and 3 TD's. Rogers is the only QB to throw over 300 yards on Sunday.
- The Washington Redskins tied a franchise record with 10 sacks of Chad Henne on Sunday. Despite RG3's injury, Washington was able to put up 41 points and break a losing streak stretching way back into last year. My reason for directing your attention here is simple though. Blake Bortles will be starting in Jacksonville sooner, rather than later. Weel ahead of their week 11 bye.
- Arian Foster has shut up all of his draft doubters. After logging another 28 carries yesterday, he's at a league leading 55 carries, with 241 yards and 1 TD (4 rec for 29 yds as well). The Texans are sitting pretty at 2-0 with everything going their way early in the season. Reminds me of a recent season they've had, maybe 2013? While i don't think that Fitzpatrick is going to go on a crazy pick-six streak, don't think for a moment that people in Houston aren't thinking about last year a whole lot right now.
- There will be lots of good pickups on the waiver wire this week. Knile Davis, Bobby Rainey, Donald Brown and Kirk Cousins all performed very well when called upon this week and all, except maybe Rainey, are expected to get the start in week 3. In fact, rumors in Washington are that Coach Gruden prefers Kirk Cousins anyways. He's certainly looked better than Griffin over Washington's last 6 or so games.
- Marc Trestman seems to have a little Belichick in him. After rumors all week that Jeffery and Marshall would not play, including a very bleak outlook on Sunday morning, both of them were on the field to start the game on Sunday night. While Jeffery may have looked like a decoy, he still made a few important catches. Marshall, on the other hand, reeled in 3 TD catches(!) and is tied for the league lead. This is a game that the 49ers had a 98.7% chance to win at one point, definitely the best comeback of the week.
- Antonio Gates is apparently living like it's 2009. He's been targeted 17 times already, has 13 receptions for 177 yards and 3 TD's. As long as he stays healthy, he will be Philip Rivers' security blanket. He's moved firmly back into the higher end of Tight Ends, currently second among ALL TE's in the league. He's going to be a starter every week for the foreseeable future.
- Leaders so far - after two weeks, the leaders at rushing, receiving and passing yards are not surprises by any stretch, none of them are studs that were expected to take this role. Passing: Matt Ryan, 679 yds, Rushing: DeMarco Murray, 285 yds, Receiving: Jordy Nelson, 292 yds. The fantasy points leader is, of course, who we all expected it to be. Jay Cutler. WHAT?!?
Well, this week we have to sit tons of fantasy players from the Seahawks, Brocos, Cardinals and Bengals. You GET to sit your Rams and Browns...just think of it that way. Anyways, here's 10 things to look for while you become one with your couch on Sunday.
- The Bears and Packers are back at it. The oldest and most played (188 games!) rivalry in the NFL. History will take a back seat this weekend though, because all we care about is fantasy football. Look for Aaron Rodgers to bounce back from a poor game last week and find Randall Cobb for at least one TD. Jay Cutler will also continue to struggle against the Pack, he's 1-9 career against them and his favorite target is banged up.
- Make sure you keep an eye on the inactive list. For the second week in a row, Arian Foster will be a game-time decision. If he doesn't go, it'll be Alfred Blue again, but I think if Foster starts, he's going to be a very sketchy play. He seems to do this every year, and doesn't hit his stride until later...or he's done for the season.
- Steve Smith is playing his old team, the Carolina Panthers, whom he spent 13 years with. Their parting wasn't totally a happy one, and while I'm sure that they will reconcile in order to make a metric shitton of money after he retires, for now he wants nothing more than to crush them. Smith is having a bit of a resurgence this year, already with 18 rec for 290 yds and 1 td, he is a must start against his old team.
- Andrew Luck is leading the league in fantasy points this season, and it appears as if he's taken the step into the elite tier of QB's (most of whom are not playing their best to start the year). With 80.88 pts, he's even ahead of Eli Manning, who had 33.1 points on Thursday night. This week, expect the Colts to roll this week and Andrew Luck to continue to impress.
- The Dolphins and Raiders are playing in London this week, the first of three games to be held in London this year. Coach Philbin seems to be losing the locker room, and with a big road trip on their plate, this could be trouble for the Dolphins. Lucky for them, they play the hapless Raiders. This game is going to go to whoever is the least jet-lagged.
- The Steelers run game last week was damn impressive, and while the now-famous kick in the face wasn't by a RB, it totally represents what their run game has looked like lately. The combination of Bell and Blount will smoke the Bucs and I predict that they combine for over 200 yards as the Steelers roll easily. This is a classic start all your Steelers, sit all your Bucs kind of game.
- Cecil Shorts is back! Everybody drink five. The Jaguars, however, are not back. They have looked better this year, and rookie Blake Bortles does look promising, but they are going to get moon-pounded in San Diego. Hope for some garbage TD's for Shorts and drink five again.
- The Falcons are coming off of a moon-pounding of their own, at the expense of the Bucs last week. This also means that Atlanta has had an extra few days of rest and planning for the Vikings, who have a rookie QB of their own going, not to mention a few other distractions. I don't expect much fantasy production outside of Asiata from the Vikings, but plenty of points will be had by the Falcons.
- The 49ers will get a chance to redeem themselves from failing to win on opening night at their new stadium...but they will fail. The Eagles are an impressive 3-0 so far this year, and the 49ers have looked vulnerable. This will be the game that LeSean McCoy breaks out, even though the 49ers are one of the best against RB's.
- Sunday night's game is going to feature a 2-1 team that is playing at home that is a Vegas underdog to a team that is 1-2. I don't think this is the wrong call either. The Saints have struggled on the road at times, but Drew Brees is 3-0 as a Saint in Dallas, with 9 TD's. This is the game where Brees returns to form. I saw Brian Billick predict that Brees will break the single game yardage record of 540 yards. I don't know if that's even remotely possible, but it sure would be cool to see. Just as long as I don't have to play against him.
Week 7 wasn't particularly special as far as injuries go. A big name went down, another name emerges as a big fantasy producer because of an injury above him. The NFL season carries on - at this point, everyone's a little injured. Here are the guys who were banged up this past week and are expected to not only miss time, but create a void on your fantasy team.
Arian Foster tore his Achilles and is, once again, out for the season. Alfred Blue and Chris Polk are going to split the duties, but neither of them are likely to emerge as a dominant fantasy player that is even close to Foster’s production.
Louis Murphy tore his ACL is and out for the season. In the same game, Vincent Jackson left with a knee injury, paving the way for Mike Evans to finally have a good game this season. Murphy was just a WR3 anyways, but it can’t hurt Evans and Jackson’s production going forward.
Josh McCown left the game on Sunday with a shoulder injury and it sounds like he’s currently day-to-day. He has a real tough matchup against Arizona this week, so maybe find a different starter for him for this week while he gets healthy.
Phillip Dorsett fractured his fibula in Sunday’s game and will be out 4-6 weeks. Donte Moncrief is already solidly in the #2 role behind T.Y. Hilton, so there isn’t much shuffling to be done on that team. Coby Fleener could see a few more targets, but isn’t really a TE1 option right now.
Joseph Randle left the game on Sunday with an oblique injury and is expected to miss at least one game. In his absence, Darren McFadden carried the ball 29 times for 152 yards and a TD. McFadden has already been confirmed as the starter this week, and if he continues to play well, could remain in that position for the rest of the year.
Week 6 is here and it's time to get your lineups set. This week, we'll be missing Vikings and Buccaneers - ooo, a themed bye week. Keep an eye on injury reports later in the week for the possible return of several players to the lineup, including Arian Foster, Jonathan Williams, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer and more!
