2016 Week 8 Rankings

Published in Fantasy Football / NFL

Week 8 is upon us, and this is the first week with some major byes. Six teams are taking the week off: Ravens, Steelers, Giants, 49ers, Rams and the Dolphins. We're not losing tons of fantasy players, and really a lot of them could use a week off - see Odell Beckham and Ben Roethlisberger. But I digress, we're here for Week 8! This week, look for Derek Carr to have a big day capping off his Florida vacation. Matt Jones, Julian Edelman and Vernon Davis (if there's no Jordan Reed) all deserve to be in your lineup as well.

2016 NFL Survivor Pool: Week 8

Published in Fantasy Football / NFL

Some of the shittiest teams in the league are on bye this week, resulting in a lot of unpredictable match-ups on the schedule for week 8. The largest point spread this week opened at just 5.5 points for New England over Buffalo, the first time in weeks there wasn't a double digit spread. This would be my pick if the Patriots were still available to me, as I have my highest points on them in the confidence pool as well. Without a healthy McCoy I see no way the Bills can hang with the Pats.

The next big favorites are the Broncos, Vikings, and Cowboys. I think the Broncos and Cowboys will probably take care of business in these games, but I am shying away from both of them. The Cowboys are at home vs an impressive looking Eagles team coming off an upset victory over the previously undefeated Vikings. In doing so I think they may have given teams the formula to dismantle Sam Bradford, bring the pressure! Maybe they are able to do the same thing to Dak and take control of that division.

I think a fired up Bears team with a returning Jay Cutler upset the Vikings at home on Monday night. The Bears season is essentially over, this will be one of their only opportunities to feel good about themselves this year. Like him or hate him, Jay Cutler possesses physical abilities that Brian Hoyer does not. If the Bears can come out focused and get an early lead I like their chances. Minnesota is a team that thrives on playing from ahead.

The Broncos are similar to the Vikings in their need for early leads in games. When these teams met 2 weeks ago the Chargers got an early lead and dismantled the Broncos. If it wasn't for some special teams mishaps for San Diego, the final score would have been embarrassing. Maybe Denver does much better at home with a normal NFL week to work with, but for that reason, I am not picking them either.

Last week I had the Bengals over the Browns in the battle of Ohio. The Bengals knocked the Browns 3rd starting quarterback of the year out of the game and cruised to a two touchdown victory.

Starting their fourth quarterback of the year this week I felt like the Jets were a slam dunk pick. My confidence was reduced slightly when it was announced that Josh McCown may return for this game. At the very least he is an NFL quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick has a chip on his shoulder after being benched for lousy Geno Smith. Baltimore beat Cleveland, New York just beat Baltimore equals a Jets win, that's just math. Expect big numbers from him and his receivers in this one as the Browns get one loss closer to that number 1 pick in next year's draft.

Cheers! Drink Five!!

Week 8 NFL Rankings

Published in Fantasy Football / NFL

We hit on more than a few guys this past week, and with all of the bye weeks upon us it's more important than ever to pick upside players that can dish out a good performance as a fill-in for your roster. Hopefully you're going into week 8 with a good record and a lot of confidence, but even if you have not been doing so well it's not too late to turn the ship around. Pay attention to this week's rankings, with special consideration to a few guys: Tyrod Taylor, Ameer Abdullah, Matt Forte, Michael Crabtree, Robby Anderson, Austin Hooper, Steven Hauschka, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

pickfive: 5 pickups for Week 8

Published in Fantasy Football / NFL

It's the end of another exciting week of football which means it's time to put your claims in for available free agents in your fantasy league to strengthen your team. I'll be going over who I think are the top five picks for you to target this week so don't miss out on them. Good luck!

Note: %owned is based on Yahoo! leagues at the time of publication.

5) Josh Doctson (WAS) - 14% owned - Doctson looks to move into the top receiver role on the Redskins' offense after Pryor and Crowder have seemingly run out of chances. A good candidate to really break out over the next few games, and he has already had a bye week which makes him a great fill-in play.

deandre washington pickup week 84) DeAndre Washington (OAK) - 4% owned - Washington played (along with fellow RB Jalen Richard) on Sunday, filling in for the ejected Marshawn Lynch. As Lynch will be heading for a one-game suspension, Washington will get the same opportunity to put up fantasy points in week 8 and it's important to note that Washington got the goalline touchdown call, not Richard. On a high-powered offense like the Raiders, he'll have more of these opportunities against Buffalo.

3) JuJu Smith-Schuster (PIT) - 15% owned - Smith-Schuster is really stepping up this season and, after quickly rising past incumbent slot receiver Eli Rogers, has also started to clearly become the #3 option in the passing game (after Brown and Bell). With the rumor mill going into high gear about a possible trade or suspension for troubled speedster Martavis Bryant, even more opportunities may open up for Smith-Schuster going forward.

2) Marlon Mack (IND) - 41% owned - Mack is going to be involved in every Colts game going forward after Robert Turbin's injury knocked him out for the season. With Andrew Luck out indefinitely, the Colts will continue to lean on the running game where they can, and Mack will continue to perform (especially in the receiving game - 4/6 for 40 yards in week 7 with another 30-yard catch called back).

1) O.J. Howard (TAM) - 14% owned - 6 receptions for 98 yards and 2 scores in last week's matchup was exactly the breakout game that Howard owners were looking for (if they were still hanging on), and we'll still see Cameron Brate involved just as heavily in the offense, but there may be room for both to be productive depending on how the offensive schemes develop in Tampa. I'm betting he'll be a flex option going forward, which makes him worth owning (and spot starting) in every league.
